Anja Mothes

2017

Anja Mothes studied Fine Art at the Münster Academy of Fine Art. Engaging in dialogue with non-human persons, she develops performances and texts that explore spaces of cohabitation as multi-species forums for conversation. She regards the living conditions and contributions of non-human animal persons as worthy of being told and addresses these in her artistic practice. In her sculptural and graphic works, she reflects on narrative construction and the materiality of storytelling.

"During my fellowship, in a place where nature conservation and tourism intersect, I came across, amongst other things, a kingfisher, numerous moon jellyfish, pine trees and a wasp queen. I was looked after very warmly by the local people I met there.”

“The scholarship gave me ample opportunity to practise using my body language to strike a note that seems less threatening to many birds – a crucial skill for my artistic practice.”
