Maike Denker, born in Münster in 1982, explores relationships and ecological connections between humans and nature in her artistic practice. After studying media art in Leipzig, she undertook international residencies and projects in London, Copenhagen and Vienna. Her works have been exhibited at the Bundeskunsthalle in Bonn, the Grassi Museum in Leipzig and the Kunstpalast in Düsseldorf, and form part of the collection at the Kunsthaus NRW in Kornelimünster, amongst others.

“During my fellowship, I explored algae as an artistic medium. The daily observation, collection and transformation of brown, red and green algae transformed the landscape and my studio into a single, cohesive workspace at that time.”

“This intense immersion into the local landscape, nature and ecological interrelationships along the Gotland coast continues to resonate with me to this day.”

Several green leaves from different species of tree are arranged in three rows against a white background, each leaf having a circular hole in it.

The beetle transforms the edges of leaves into a shelter for its offspring. From a notch in a leaf to a drawing: observing nature becomes a visual system.
