Anna Sundström

2021

The photographer Anna Sundström lives on Gotland and works as a freelance photographer on the island. She works mainly with portraits and still lifes, and runs her own artistic projects. Among other things, she has decorated two closed wards at the psychiatric clinic in Visby, as well as receptions and waiting rooms at Visby Hospital. She was awarded Region Gotland's Special Assignment 2022, a support for professional cultural creators, which resulted in the project From Death to Life.

"My time in Dortmund was very significant for me. I met friendly people who showed me around. I was drawn to the large Westfalenpark, where I walked and took photographs almost every day."

"The project I was working on was heavily shaped by the park, as well as by the ephemeral nature of the natural world and our own lives."

About the work:

"I started this project during my stay at the Künstler*innenhaus in Dortmund. The project resulted in two exhibitions in Visby on Gotland. The work Practice Breathing, Furlough and No longer here, is part of a series of 14 images. The whole project is titled From Death to Life.

The project asks questions about transience, being in the gap between the past and the future, daring to take the step into the new, and daring to leave what has come to an end. The images are printed on thin Lokta paper, buried in the ground and then “resurrected” with marks and stains. A symbol of the fact that we cannot control everything that happens to us in life. The artist wants the works remind us of the transience of our earthly existence and to take advantage of life here and now."

Two people with dark, mask-like patterns on their faces are sitting next to each other at a table. Both are wearing dark jackets and have their hair tied back in a bun. Each person has their hands on the table and is leaning over a large bowl.
